The 2014, Martys Awards happened last night at the Living Arts Center. This was my first time attending anything like this here in the city of Mississauga and i have to say this first and foremost, that I had no idea of the talent that exists in this city.

Let’s start with the reception. The living Arts Center is a beautiful location. We walked in and immediately felt like we were in a different world. A word of Art and Artists. Just from the clothing you could feel creativity oozing out  of them. There were all kinds of people there PR professionals, Writers, Musicians, Veterans of the Arts, Painters and Spectators such as myself. The organizers and the Arts Council members did a spectacular job putting together this event. Sophisticated yet so laid back. They had photography stations set up everywhere ( for people like me that is  a YES! fist pump moment). I met people i would not have otherwise come across in my daily professional life.

We were ushered into the auditorium. I do think the stage could have used something (more). Seemed rather empty and the unused. The hosts of the night Stephanie McKenzie and John McAneney from the  Johnny Max Band were a good team. I thought for the most part Stephanie stole the show. The show started with a group of young dancers who did an amazing job of showing us some moves on the Song “ Happy” ( totally loved it). The nominees and performers were excited to be there. The funniest party for me was when they announced the literary award Noms and there was only one person nominated. The hosts states the obvious and we burst into laughter.

The show itself, could have used more pizazz. It was good, not great. It was fun, but not extremely entertaining. If you see how other award shows are done, their goal ultimately is to get non-artsy people involved. That is how you get funds generated. A little for everyone, the Artist and the non-Artist.

Finger food would have been good too. Just saying. All in all. this night was fun and i got to learn all about the Art scene in Mississauga. We are very lucky to have such talent to call our own.

Leelas Ahmad.
